This sequence was produced as a test of a RenderMan displacement shader. As shown in the inset, the the space station is made from trivial geometry, but once textured a complex image is produced.
The sequence is animated in Houdini using a particle sop to explode the ship, and another sop particle system to provide flame (the marterial can be found in the User Guide). When using particles to deform geometry the sort sop is your friend - sorting by proximity to point allows explosion to spread out from the centre.
